The Opportunity

Our client, a high-profile membership organisation which advocates for London’s business community, has created a new position for A Head of Policy and Public Affairs.

As the leader of the Policy and Public Affairs team you will work with partners and members to create clear and compelling policy positions.  You will influence government policy in the interests of the members and wider industry, creating strong relationships with policymakers and influencers at a local, national and, where appropriate, international level.

Main responsibilities

  • Identify and promote policy solutions to the key issues facing members. This will include creating a research programme (reports, publications, events, etc) aligned with the organisation’s policy priorities.
  • Support the CEO’s public affairs engagement programme, maintaining day-to-day relationships with relevant stakeholders including officials (GLA and central government), MPs’ staff, trade associations, and committee members.
  • Draft public affairs materials including briefings, speaking remarks, updates, letters etc in partnership with external advisers.
  • Line manage the wider policy team.  Manage the policy and research team’s outputs, assigning work, tracking progress, and signing off deliverables before sharing with senior leaders.
  • Work with external advisers on policy and public affairs strategy. 

Key skills and experience required

  • Relevant experience of working in a policy role within a think tank, government, parliamentary, public affairs, campaigns, political party, or related environment.
  • Experience of researching, drafting and delivering a policy programme.
  • Managing staff workloads and professional development.
  • Excellent written skills with the ability to communicate complex issues and develop innovative ways of communicating.
  • Experience of working for a membership organisation.
