Ellwood Atfield is delighted to have partnered with Electrical Safety First (ESF) to recruit for a new Legislative Advisor role.

Electrical Safety First is the UK’s leading charity on electrical safety, and they regularly work with the media, government, businesses, and electrical industry to make sure that everyone in the UK can use electricity safely. They campaign on issues including product recall and registration, electrical DIY, the importance of using registered electricians and counterfeit electrical goods, through raising awareness with the public and working with politicians to ensure Government is doing all it can to keep people safe from electrical accidents.

The opportunity:

In this exciting new role as Legislative Advisor, you will work closely with their Public Affairs and Technical teams on legislation and standards to advance the Charity’s UK-wide policy agenda, with the opportunity to shape the scope of your impact. You’ll work on high-profile policy issues across government departments to drive change - from holding tech giants like online marketplaces accountable for unsafe products to shaping policies that protect the most vulnerable from electrical risks. Whether tackling substandard housing or cracking down on dangerous appliances, you’ll help ensure electrical safety remains a priority on the political agenda.

You’ll lead on analysing and shaping legislation to make homes safer, directly supporting their mission, championing electrical safety across the UK. You’ll review and draft on current and upcoming regulations, bills, and policy guidance, and build strong relationships with political party legislative teams to establish Electrical Safety First as a key player in shaping legislation at all levels.

Main responsibilities:

  • Monitor legislative development and work to establish Electrical Safety First as a key stakeholder in shaping legislation at all levels across all Nations.  
  • Support legislative drafting, enabling timely responses to new opportunities.
  • Build strong relationships with legislative teams responsible for drafting legislation or policy papers, such as civil servants, political parties, and stakeholders.
  • Work closely with the technical team to incorporate their insights into public affairs strategies to ensure legislative requests are sensible, evidence-based and aligned with developments in the electrical product safety and installation industry, especially on standards.

Person specification:

  • A degree in law, politics, or a related field.
  • Proven knowledge and/or experience in legal analysis, policy development, or legislation, with a proactive approach to problem-solving and identifying opportunities to shape this.
  • A demonstrable interest in public affairs, politics, and/or policymaking.
  • An interest in and motivation for Electrical Safety First’s cause, with a willingness to learn and grow within the role.
