The Opportunity

The Energy Networks Association (ENA) is the industry body for energy network operators, its members operate the wires and cables powering the UK and Ireland.

Network operators sustain 26,000 jobs, facilitate 1,500 apprenticeships - with 700 more being recruited this year - and ensure the safe, reliable operation of over 500,000 miles of wires and cables. ENA member companies are driving £33 billion of expenditure and investment over the next few years to ensure a secure, reliable energy grid for the future.

Transmission networks cover the long journey from where energy is produced to where it's needed in large quantities, while distribution networks take it the last mile, bringing it right to your doorstep.

Distribution networks are like the dual carriageways and B-roads in your community. They take electricity from the transmission lines and bring it to your home, business, or any other place where you use power.

The opportunity:

The Director of Policy and External Affairs will perform an important role in positioning the ENA as a leading source of insight, intelligent analysis and relevant opinion on energy networks nationally and create a long-term environment to attract the necessary investment to achieve net zero.

Accountabilities include:

  • As a member of the ENA leadership team, input to the development of the association’s strategy, culture, values and operating model.
  • Devise, lead and oversee the implementation of a stakeholder engagement, policy, public affairs, and media relations strategy; to build and maintain trust with key stakeholders, including Government departments, parliamentarians, trade bodies, think tanks, members and partners.
  • Navigate the UK and Ireland political and landscape, ensuring that ENA is a high impact association on behalf of the energy networks market.
  • Serve as an industry spokesperson during critical situations, crafting clear, consistent messaging to protect and enhance the industry’s reputation.
  • Lead, manage, and inspire a high performing team to ensure they are equipped to achieve their objectives.

Requirements include:

  • Leadership level experience in public affairs, influencing public policy, and building relationships with key stakeholders to enhance reputation and influence, ideally within the energy sector or a related industry.
  • A strong track record of developing and implementing public policy and communications strategies to include media relations and public affairs that engage key stakeholders, including Government, industry, and the public.
  • Proven ability to think strategically, solve problems using data and analysis, and influence decision-making at the highest levels.
  • A comprehensive understanding of UK Government policy processes, including policy development, legislative procedures, and parliamentary engagement, with good political acumen.
  • Experience leading, motivating and developing a high performing team.

This is a brilliant opportunity to join the leadership of a nationally critical association, act as its spokesperson on important policy issues and be part of the answer to achieving net zero.
