The Opportunity

The Organisation:

Muscular Dystrophy UK (MDUK) is the only charity in the UK that provides vital support to the more than 60 types of muscle-wasting conditions. With 110,000 children and adults affected by this life-limiting condition, it is essential to raise awareness with fundraising groups being a key representative in the community.

The Role:

To lead Muscular Dystrophy UK’s (MDUK) policy and campaigns strategy to ensure the charity influences change to benefit people with muscle wasting and weakening conditions. This includes influencing how NHS services and support are designed and commissioned and driving improvements to high quality, specialist NHS neuromuscular care and access to effective treatments. It will work closely with all key stakeholders, including ministers, parliamentarians, commissioners, clinicians and volunteers in all four nations of the UK.

Main Responsibilities:

  • Lead and develop MDUK’s policy, campaigns and parliamentary initiatives across the UK to ensure the voice of people with muscle wasting and weakening conditions is heard and policy in all four nations reflects their needs
  • Lead and develop MDUK’s engagement on the commissioning of health services and our delivery of professional development activity; ensuring MDUK is the lead organisation driving specialist NHS commissioning and training health professionals to improve knowledge of muscle wasting conditions  
  • Work with Director of Marketing and Director of Development to ensure our campaigns are planned, delivered and evaluated in an integrated way which maximises opportunity to brand profile and income generation
  • Lead engagement with relevant authorities to ensure people with muscle wasting and weakening conditions have access to effective     treatments and support
  • Work with the research team on ensuring access to emerging rare disease drugs and treatments, maintaining and developing positive working relationships with NICE, NHS England, NIHR and relevant devolved bodies across the UK
  • Provide effective leadership for Policy and Campaigns team and, as part of the SLT, for the charity as a whole

Key Skills and Experiences:

  • Experience of developing and leading evidence based policy, public affairs and campaign strategies to deliver impact
  • Experience of leading and developing high performing teams as well as Senior Management level experience
  • Experience of influencing parliamentarians in Westminster and devolved nations
  • Previous experience in charity or a health-related organisation is desirable
